As the largest private landowner in Port Louis, United Docks is uniquely positioned to transform the way businesses operate in Mauritius. Our extensive portfolio allows us to develop workspaces that integrate seamlessly with urban life.
Port Louis’ maritime history began in 1857 with the establishment of the Mauritius Docks, followed by the Albion Docks Co. Ltd in 1860. By 1858, the port was already a thriving hub, handling a remarkable 852 ships. Recognising its strategic importance as a stopover between Europe and the East Indies, the Mauritius Sugar Syndicate expanded the quays in response to the growing maritime traffic.
Port Louis was a vital Indian Ocean trade hub. In 1876, The Mauritius Docks Co. Ltd became The New Mauritius Docks Co. Ltd, handling sugar and general cargo. This strategic shift, directed by The Mauritius Sugar Syndicate, solidified the port’s role in the island’s development.
Established during colonial times, The New Mauritius Docks supported maritime trade. It underwent modernisation to meet growing global trade demands. A 1950 labour dispute over handling heavy sugar bags led to a weight restriction on sugar consignments. In 1973, the company merged with Albion Docks Co. Ltd to form Société United Docks Limited.
Société United Docks td managed sugar and general cargo from 1973 to 1980. The Bulk Sugar Terminal’s operation in 1980 shifted the sugar storage focus, leaving Société United Docks Ltd handling general cargo until 1983.
The Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd’s establishment in 1983 impacted Société United Docks Ltd’ core business of general cargo storage. In response, the company transitioned to warehouse and office rentals from 1983 to 1991. Incorporated in 1991, United Docks Ltd acquired Société United Docks Ltd’ assets and was subsequently listed on the Mauritius Stock Exchange. The company primarily focused on investment and finance from 1991 to 2014.
Since 2015, United Docks Ltd has evolved into a prominent real estate developer. The company’s flagship project, The Docks, is a new business district in Port Louis comprising four phases. With a projected Gross Building Area of 200,000 square meters, The Docks will accommodate approximately 5,000 professionals.
In addition to The Docks, United Docks has developed Park and Ride, Mauritius’ largest eco-friendly car park, reducing CO2 emissions by 200 tons annually. The company has also ventured into hospitality with Marina Garden restaurant and event spaces: Les Suites, a 1,300 sqm venue for corporate events, and Le Workspace, a 4,500 sqm co-working space. United Docks Ltd continues to explore new opportunities for future development.
United Docks Ltd was incorporated on the 1st October 1991, taking over all the assets of the Societe United Docks. United Docks Ltd has since been listed on the official market of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.
